How Occupational Therapy Can Help Improve Mobility Issues

Occupational therapy is a branch of healthcare that focuses on helping people to achieve their goals and improve their quality of life despite physical or cognitive limitations. One area where occupational therapy can be extremely beneficial is in improving mobility issues.

What are mobility issues?

A mobility issue refers to any physical limitation that affects a person’s ability to move around independently. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors including injury, illness, or disability. Mobility issues can range from mild to severe and can affect any part of the body! Seniors are particularly susceptible to mobility issues as they age, and their muscles start to weaken.

How can occupational therapy help?

Occupational therapy can help to improve mobility in a number of ways, and through the use of specific techniques and strategies.

  • Exercising and stretching: One of the most effective ways to improve mobility is through exercise and stretching. Our occupational therapists will work with residents to develop personalized exercise programs that target the specific areas of their bodies that need strengthening or stretching. These exercises can help to improve range of motion, reduce pain, increase strength, and help residents perform activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Assistive Devices: Another way OT can improve mobility issues is through the proper use of assistive devices. This might include walkers, canes, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids. Our occupational therapists will help to select the right device for residents’ needs and will teach them how to use them safely and effectively. Education on mobility aids is extremely important as improper use will not benefit the user and can even cause more harm and strain.
  • Room Modifications: Another important facet of occupational therapy is making modifications to make homes and rooms more accessible. This may include the installation of grab bars in the bathroom, widening doorways, or adding ramps or stair lifts. These modifications make it easier for individuals with mobility issues to move around safely and will reduce the risk of falls and other accidents. At Shaker Place, all resident rooms and areas are fully equipped with mobility issues in mind, and our occupational therapists work with residents to ensure they know how to safely move around!
  • Training and Proper Education: Occupational therapists also educate and inform those with mobility issues on how to properly use their body when lifting, moving objects, or moving around themselves. They can also train on how to safely perform activities of daily living while conserving energy. This will help individuals learn how to reduce the strain on their bodies and learn new ways to achieve their daily tasks.
