  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

    Details

    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    This employee performs routine para-professional nursing services in the care of residents in accordance with a detailed and well-defined resident care plan under direct supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or a higher level nursing administrator. Assignments concerning resident care are given specifically with limited leeway allowed for exercise of independent judgment. The work may be performed in an institutional setting (including the Albany County Correctional Facility*) or at the residents or clients home as an employee of the County. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Nursing Assistants. Does related work as required.

    Typical Work Activities

    • Carries out therapeutic treatments and administers medications as prescribed by physicians in accordance with established policy and standards of professional practice; Typical work activities;
    • Reports critical changes of a resident/resident to an RN, or higher level nursing administrator;
    • Assists in the implementation of the nursing care plan;
    • Takes the temperature, notes the rate of pulse and respiration and observes and records other signs and symptoms as directed;
    • Collects specimens and assists in carrying out diagnostic procedures under supervision;
    • Responsible for clinical record documentation;
    • Assists in the admission and discharge of residents;
    • Assists residents in performing ambulation exercise and maintaining proper joint motion;
    • Cares for equipment used in care of residents as directed;
    • Makes beds and performs other tasks designed to provide a suitable environment for residents;
    • Bathes residents and gives personal hygienic care;
    • When acting as charge nurse, has responsibility for supervising over other LPN’s and NA’s;
    • May participate in QA monitoring and Audits. May serve on QA subcommittees.

    • Working knowledge of nursing techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices;
    • Working knowledge of hospital sanitation and hygiene;
    • Ability to carryout exactly detailed oral and written instructions;

    • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Completion of a course of study approved by the State Education Department as qualifying for Licensed Practical Nurse.

    Special Requirement

    Eligibility for a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Possession of the license at the time of appointment.

    * When located at the Albany County Correctional Facility, the terms clients and residents shall refer to the inmate population.

  • Nursing Assistant

    Details

    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    Performs routine non-professional tasks in support of nursing services for residents of a Skilled Nursing Facility. This work involves the routine care of residents and the performance of such indirect, non-nursing or non-technical services for residents as are not required to be performed by a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Professional Nurse. Work is subject to general supervision. Does related work as required.

    Typical Work Activities

    • Assists in walking, feeding and bathing residents and caring for their personal needs;
    • Assists nurses in lifting and turning heavy or helpless residents, in restraining irrational residents, in holding residents for treatment and in care disturbed residents;
    • Assists residents in the use of walkers, crutches and similar equipment in a prescribed physical therapy program;
    • Helps regulate number of visitors and gives information to visitors in accordance with instructions from the nurse in charge;
    • Assembles information concerning the residents condition and enters reports on the residents record;
    • Cleans and sterilizes hospital equipment;
    • Labels and stores residents clothes and turns over valuables to person designed by hospital;
    • May assist with care and moving of room furniture, fixtures and supplies to help keep residents safe and comfortable;
    • On occasion may be assigned clerical tasks;
    • May accompany or assist resident/residents in supportive nursing services and transporting of resident/residents in ambulance or clinic car;
    • May participate in QA monitoring and Audits. May serve on QA subcommittees.

    • Ability to understand and carry out routine non-technical, oral and written directions relative to care of residents;
    • Physical strength and mental alertness; willingness to cooperate and carefully follow a prescribed routine;

    Special Requirement

    At time of appointment, possession of a certification as a Nursing Assistant issued by the New York State Department of Health.

  • Occupational Therapy Assistant

    Details

    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    This is a skilled paraprofessional position involving responsibility for the application of treatment procedures to residents to remedy or maintain the ability to cope with their environment. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director who evaluates the resident, develops the treatment plan, and designates treatment procedures to be followed. Progress and observations are reported to the Director who modifies the treatment to promote maximum rehabilitative and restorative measures. Does related work as required.

    Typical Work Activities

    • Carries out occupational therapy procedures by working with residents individually or in groups to provide treatment of an illness or disability and training in the activities of daily living;
    • Confers periodically with an Occupational Therapist regarding all facets of resident care and related activities;
    • May fabricate and apply splints and other supportive devices, trains residents in self-care activities, and uses varied media to improve their physical or mental functioning;
    • Prepares and sets up occupational therapy treatment apparatus;
    • Participates with other facility personnel in the formulation of residents’ total health care plans;
    • Observes, records and reports residents’ reactions to occupational therapy treatments and programs;
    • Prepares and maintains records of treatment;
    • Provides for and observes safety precautions during all phases of therapy;
    • Inventories, cleans, stores and maintains supplies and equipment;
    • Attends meetings as directed;
    • May participate in QA monitoring and Audits. May serve on QA subcommittees.

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

    • Working knowledge of the principles, techniques and terminology of occupational therapy treatment procedures;
    • Working knowledge of occupational therapy materials and equipment and their appropriate application to a variety of resident disabilities;
    • Ability to observe, record and report residents responses to treatment;
    • Ability to work effectively with the aged, ill and disabled;
    • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position

    Minimum Qualifications

    Candidate must possess a New York State Department of Education certification to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant, and be eligible to participate in the examination for national certification.

  • Food Service Helper

    Details

    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    Assists in the preparation and service of food, along with the cleaning of kitchen equipment. This is routine manual work performed under immediate supervision in connection with the preparation and service of food. On occasion Food Service Helpers may perform cooking duties involving lesser degrees of skill than regularly required of employees in the classification of Cook. Does related work as required.

    Typical Work Activities

    • Sets tables and cleans them after meals;
    • Fills sugar bowls and salt and pepper shakers;
    • Works on the tray lines serving designated portions per menus;
    • Fills food carts and delivers foods to designated areas;
    • Polishes silverware, tables and chairs;
    • Cleans dining rooms and dish and linen closets;
    • Cleans, washes and otherwise prepares vegetables and fruit for cooking;
    • Prepares salads, sandwiches and desserts;
    • Helps cooks in any phases of their duties;
    • Washes dishes, pots and pans by hand or machine;
    • Sweeps, mops and cleans kitchen;
    • Assists in proper storage of food;
    • May act as cashier;
    • May participate in QA monitoring and Audits;
    • May serve on QA subcommittees.

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

    • Working knowledge of the proper methods of serving food and of the care of tableware, glassware, silver, and kitchen appliances;
    • Ability to follow oral and written directions;
    • Good physical condition.
