Diversity at Shaker Place Rehabilitation & Nursing Center

Shaker Place Nurse

At Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, we pride ourselves on not only being an industry leader in rehabilitation technologies and treatments, but also a widely diverse group of employees and residents. We employ people from all over the world and we are committed to engaging all individuals looking for employment and providing opportunities to individuals with mental or physical disabilities. Diversity is what makes us different; it is also what makes us better.

At Shaker Place, we have a highly diversified workforce from Albany County and the surrounding Capital Region. We have Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants from all over the world, including India, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, Philippines, Poland, and Puerto Rico. We also have a highly diversified resident population and employees who can help residents feel at home by speaking to them in their native languages, including Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Creole, Irish, Italian, and sign language. Our goal at Shaker Place is to be a caring and compassionate community. Our employees and residents help make this a possibility.

We coordinate with local schools, colleges, and community organizations, and offer internships and clinical education for students. We also encourage local students and recent graduates to join our caring and compassionate team. These organizations and schools have some amazing students from BOCES, Albany Community Action Partnership (ACAP), Educational Opportunity Center (EOC), Job Corp, Mildred Elley, Schenectady County Community College, and Maria College. Hands-on experience really helps students understand their strengths and gain knowledge they won’t receive from a textbook. They also bring a fresh and new perspective to Shaker Place.

Shaker Place Rehabilitation & Nursing Center also supports an extraordinarily diverse group of volunteers and performers in order to reflect the interests of our residents. Past volunteers have included SUNY Albany students, local Girl Scout troops, Albany Musicians Union, students from St. Anne’s Institute, and veterans from the American Legion. Our residents also take part in the Annual Operation Christmas Child, where they create care boxes as part of Samaritan Purse’s initiative to provide gifts and joy to children and families throughout the world. Additionally, Shaker Place coordinates with representatives from a wide range of religious groups and individuals, such as: Empire Christian Church, New Jerusalem Home of the Saved, Muslim Soup Kitchen, Jehovah’s Witnesses Bible Study, and local rabbis and bishops. It is not only our job to care for your physical needs, but also your emotional, spiritual, and philanthropic needs. By offering diverse programming we can accomplish that together.

We believe that diversity brings out the best in everyone. From our residents and our full-time and part-time staff, to our interns and volunteers, together we hope to bring culture, understanding, and compassion to everyone at Shaker Place.
