Alexis Miles LPN
My name is Alexis Miles and I have worked at Shaker Place for a year and six months. I’m a licensed practical nurse. I assist with medical administration. I work closely with the nurse managers and the doctor here. One of my main jobs is to assist with patient care. It’s very hands on, especially if I have treatments for that patient. I will work with them if they need help toileting or helping being changed. I will assist them with that. The favorite part of my job is working with the residents. I love them. I feel like I always have a story to tell. They are so funny and it’s very rewarding. Not only is it nice to work with the residents, I think my favorite thing here also is the co-workers. You know, we just we really make it happen for them. We, you know, the teamwork here is amazing. I have very good relationships with all of my co-workers, and I think that’s very important for the residents too that they have people here that are able to work together, get along, because, you know, it makes for the best environment for them. So that’s my favorite thing. Every day, really. We’re here to help. We’re always here to help. We’re here to listen. And anything you need, we have your back. I think that it is an important position because we’re here for them. These are people. This is our job. But these are also people. And, you know, they have feelings and they have emotions. And I think that we’re kind of their biggest support in a way. You know, we’re here for them. So that’s why I think it’s important.
I actually did my clinicals here with BOCES, so that was very nice. That’s actually what made me apply. Also, they were talking about the GPN program, so I started here in August 2021 as a GPN which was very nice because I got to work with the nurses up until I took my NCLEX and they also provided an online course that would help me prepare for my NCLEX and just working closely with the nurses. It just really prepared me to really go from CNA to LPN. Some of the benefits would be, you know, I get to I learn a lot every day from all of the nurses that have been here for years. There’s a lot of career growth like room for growth in my career. There’s a lot of support here as far as, you know, the administration and the nurses. And I think they’re very helpful. And I think that’s one of the benefits of working here.
Akiem Houze CNA
My name is Akiem and I’ve been with Shaker Place for almost six months now. So I’m a CNA. I do care on the residents. I work 7 to 3, so pretty much I’m coming in, waking them up, getting their day started, feeding them breakfast. You know, whatever is needed for them to get started. Well, the benefits for me specifically would be the pension and also the health benefits, being that I do have two children that actually help with me going to school because I actually want to go to school to be a nurse. So I’ll be starting the end of this year.
Shaker Place is a good facility because they actually will help you through school, so the benefits are very good. My favorite part of my job is my residents and the care for my residents. I love my co-workers. We’re like family. To be honest with you, I love my co-workers, I love my unit manager, Margaret. She’s excellent. I assist residents by brushing their teeth, bathing them, clothing them, making sure their environment is clean. Also for conversation and company. A friend pretty much.
Lettie Manning Environmental Aid
My name is Lettie Manning. I have worked here for almost seven years now. My job title comes under the umbrella of Environmental Aid, which means I’m in the housekeeping department. I do basically housekeeping tasks like cleaning bathrooms, taking out the garbage, and doing low and high dusting. A typical day involves doing what we have to do and trying to enjoy it.
A few years back, I applied for a nursing scholarship here and was accepted, which was one of the positive things that happened to me. Some people here brighten up your day and encourage you to walk up to them and ask how your day is going, which really lifts your spirits and makes you want to come to work.
My position here is important because if it’s not clean, then you will have people coming in with different expressions on their faces. I believe my position is very important in maintaining the cleanliness of Shaker Place. We assist residents by giving them a cup of coffee or a drink, telling them where they need to go, or providing a blanket or a towel.
We have good managers and a good Head of Department, and overall we get support from the managers. We also receive insurance, dental, optical, and all the other types of insurance you can think of.
Christina Manning LPN
My name’s Christina. I’m a nurse here at Shaker Place and I’ve been here for approximately 20 years. I do this here every day, including passing meds to the residents and doing daily treatments on them. I also have to do patient care at times, which is actually one of my favorite things to do. I work closely with the doctors and the family members in coordinating their care.
Definitely, the one thing that inspires me the most are my residents. When I tell you they are like family to me, I mean it. Being here for 20 years, if I can just bring a little kind of smile to their face every morning just as they do mine, then that is enough inspiration for me.
I think one of the greatest benefits here is the New York State pension that is offered. It’s awesome for when you get a chance to retire at a certain age. Another great benefit is the very affordable health care for the staff and their family members, with great coverage. The new daycare here is also going to be a great asset to the facility and the staff. It’s going to be offered at a low cost for our employees, which I think is wonderful. I wish I had it when my kids were little. It’s going to afford them the opportunity during the day to go in and check on their children. I know for me that would offer me a little bit of comfort knowing that they’re okay and I could see them.
