This is a professional per diem position involving responsibility for evaluating, planning and providing speech and language pathology (speech therapy) services and treatment to residents in accordance with either written prescription or referral from a physician who provides medical direction or with the results of the professional therapist’s assessment. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the speech director. Performs other tasks as required.
Responsibilities/Typical Work Activities:
- Screens residents to determine the need for speech therapy evaluation;
- Evaluates resident need for speech therapy services in accordance with the orders of the physician;
- Develops plans of care for residents as they pertain to speech and language pathology services;
- Confers with the physician and other members of the interdisciplinary staff to determine the development of the residents’ plan of care;
- Provides speech therapy services to residents in accordance with the physician orders and/or plan of care;
- May provide in-service training to staff members regarding speech and language pathology and resident communication;
- Maintains proper records and documentation for all evaluations, treatments, consultations, progress notes;
- May participate in the development of facility policies and procedures;
Full Performance, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
- Good knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of the discipline of speech therapy;
- Good knowledge of the pathological conditions and psychosocial factors that may affect a resident’s clinical condition;
- Working knowledge of professional and community resources applicable to the practice of speech and language pathology;
- Ability to plan and complete work in a timely and efficient manner;
- Ability to work well with others;
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited and registered college or university with a master’s degree in speech and language pathology.
- Current license and registration by the State of New York Department of Education as a speech therapist.
Special Requirement:
- Certificate of clinical competence in speech and language pathology (CCC-SLP).
